10 Simple Ways to NOT Fail at Organic Gardening (Video Guide)

Organic gardening is a hobby that has really grown on me over the past decade, pun totally intended.

It’s where I go to reset my mind; a place where slow, steady progress is always happening, often in the form of food. Currently at least 50% of my family’s produce comes directly from a few garden patches of our suburban lawn.

As our little food forest escape has grown, I’ve given more and more tours to friends and family, with the hopes of inspiring them to try it for themselves.

As I send them off with an armful of plants and seeds, I can usually sense a familiar hesitation: they are mistaking me for some kind of Jimi Hendrix of gardening.

Sure, I managed to grow 250 lbs of squash this spring in part of the front yard, but if they knew how little effort and knowledge it took, they would see it differently. In reality, I’m more like the guitar player who’s learned the basic chords and writes music for fun in their free time.

There are no one-size-fits-all guides for gardening, since every place is different, but a few proverbial gardening chords is all it really takes for anyone to be successful at growing their own food.

So if starting an organic garden is something you have thought about as well, but you’re afraid of failing, here are my best tips to help you succeed.
