It is rich in nutrients, low in calories, and has a creamy taste that is similar to cow's milk. However, not all almond milk is created equal. Commercial, high processed almond milk may not be as good for you as you think. In this article, we'll explore the pros and cons of almond milk, and show you how to make it at home so you can enjoy all its health benefits.

Pros of Almond Milk

Almond milk is a great source of vitamin E, which is essential for skin health. It is also rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. These nutrients help to build strong bones, regulate blood pressure, and support heart health. Almond milk is low in calories and sugar, making it a good option for people who want to maintain a healthy weight or have diabetes.

<img src="https://blog.naturehub.com/content/images/2023/04/franki-chamaki-TikgeFyyuOQ-unsplash.jpg" class="kg-image" alt="Is Almond Milk Good or Bad? These additives can cause digestive issues, allergies, and inflammation. High-processed almond milk may also lack nutrients and have a lower almond content than homemade almond milk.

Another issue with commercial almond milk is the use of carrageenans, a common additive used to thicken and stabilize the texture of the milk. Carrageenans are extracted from red seaweed and have been linked to gastrointestinal issues, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There is also some evidence suggesting that carrageenans may be associated with the development of rheumatoid arthritis and colon cancer. In fact, the European Union banned the use of carrageenans in infant formula due to concerns about its safety. While some studies suggest that the amount of carrageenans in almond milk is relatively small, it is still a cause for concern, especially for those with existing gastrointestinal issues or a family history of colon cancer. It's important to read the labels carefully and choose almond milk without carrageenans, or better yet, make your own almond milk at home.

<img src="https://blog.naturehub.com/content/images/2023/04/dafdafd.jpg" class="kg-image" alt="Is Almond Milk Good or Bad? Food additive E407 or E407a

The Solution: Homemade Almond Milk

The good news is that you can easily make your own almond milk at home, with just a few simple ingredients. Homemade almond milk is not only healthier, but also cheaper and more delicious than store-bought almond milk.

Here's how to make it:

Ingredients:

1 cup raw almonds

4 cups water

1-2 tbsp maple syrup (optional)

1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

Soak the almonds in water overnight, or for at least 4 hours.

Rinse the almonds, and add them to a blender with 4 cups of fresh water.

Blend for 2-3 minutes, until smooth and creamy.

Strain the almond milk through a nut milk bag or cheesecloth, into a bowl or jar.

Add maple syrup and vanilla extract (if using), and stir well.

Store in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Homemade almond milk is a healthier and more natural alternative to commercial almond milk. It contains no additives or preservatives, and is rich in nutrients that are essential for your health. It is also easy to make, and can be customized to your taste with different sweeteners and flavors.

In conclusion, almond milk can be good or bad, depending on how you make it. Commercial, high-processed almond milk is often loaded with additives that can be harmful to your health. On the other hand, homemade almond milk is a natural and healthy alternative that is easy to make and delicious to drink. By making your own almond milk at home, you can enjoy all the health benefits of this nutritious drink without any of the negative side effects.

If you are looking for more healthy recipes and DIYs, check NatureHub 👉
https://naturehub.com/

Why Moms Are Abandoning Baby Powder Made From Talc & Cornstarch And What They’re Using Instead.

Why Moms Are Abandoning Baby Powder Made From Talc & Cornstarch And What They’re Using Instead.

Toxic-free Living

Wellness

Justin Lewis

So What’s The Problem With Talc?

First, what is Talc? Talc is a naturally occurring silicate mineral extracted from rock deposits in the crust of the Earth to make talcum powder. The cosmetic industry crushes, dries, and mill talc into a fine, supple, and white powder utilized in numerous products such as baby powder, cosmetics, deodorant, ceramics, and paint.

Baby powder made from talc has been popular in America for many years. In fact, it was probably used on you butt when you were a baby. Its silky texture and ability to absorb moisture make it ideal for preventing baby diaper rashes and a variety of other skin care problems. However, there is a darker side to this product, and recently a string of legal actions and research has uncovered a link between baby powder and ovarian and lung problems.

According to a 2003 meta-analysis of 16 research studies, scientists found a 33% increase in ovarian cancer for frequent users. Asbestos, which is found in talc products has long been associated with mesothelioma. But in spite of this, many companies continued putting it in products and are now paying the price, along with many people they harmed.

Between 2015-2020 $188 billion dollars was paid out collectively by Johnson & Johnson, Avon, Colgate-Palmolive, and Whittake-Clark & Daniels for cases relating to Mesothelioma.

And just this year, after thousands of talcum powder lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson, alleging that the company's talc-based products, “Johnson's Baby Powder,” has caused the plaintiffs to develop ovarian cancer and mesothelioma. J & J finally agreed to pay 9 billion to victims.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Environmental Health also stated in 2018 in its fourth edition of Pediatric Environmental Health that parents should avoid using talcum powder to prevent talc pneumoconiosis, a lung condition brought on by breathing in particles. According to the AAP, many newborn deaths have a link to talc pneumoconiosis.

So, Is Cornstarch A Better Alternative To Talc?

Cornstarch is made from Corn, aka maize kernels. Like talc, Its absorbent and helps keep skin cool like talc, but cornstarch has slightly bigger particles which means its less risky to inhale. But cornstarch is still not a great substitute.

Most corn being grown in the USA is genetically modified and contains trace amounts of another likely carcinogen, the pesticide known as glyphosate. And since cornstarch is extremely fine grained you might be giving that trace glyphosate a direct route into your lungs. So if you’re going to use it try to at least make sure it’s organic first.

But really, its not recommended to use at all for two health reasons.

Lung Damage: The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) currently discourages the utility of all baby powders due to the risk of lung damage and breathing issues.

Candida Infection: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) discourages the use of cornstarch because Candida albicans (a fungi infection) due to the fact that cornstarch is a culture medium for bacteria, and fungus like candida. A candida infection can cause diaper rash, and cornstarch can make it worse. And Candida in turn can cause an assortment of health problems.

Yeast diaper rash and dermatitis on the belly of a newborn baby

Solutions: So What’s A Safe Alternative For Talc and Cornstarch Baby Powder?

Instead of using talc or cornstarch powder, try some of these healthier options.

Basic Cleansing: The most basic and affordable option. Clean the skin with warm water, a mild organic soap, and witch hazel. Acute symptoms may include irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Moreover, people may have nausea, tingling in the arms and legs, headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, or other symptoms. Additionally, the burning of this chemical can lead to the production of some of the most toxic forms of dioxin, known as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-dioxin or “TCDD.” Dioxin, one of the primary ingredients in Agent Orange is a persistent chemical carcinogen and hormone disruptor which bioaccumulates across the food chain.

Butyl acrylate: A clear liquid for producing sealants, solvents, and paints. And how much does it really matter?

In this article, we find out.

What Is Business Transparency? (And How Important Is It?)

Imagine a time when you were deceived in life and eventually learned that you were deceived.

It hurt, right?

Maybe you didn’t trust that person ever again.

Maybe the deception rankled so much that you couldn’t trust anyone ever again.

It’s the same when it comes to business. If you as a business deceive a customer and they find out, they won’t trust you anymore.

And the thing is, this has a huge knock-on effect. When a company is deceitful and is found out, they lose potentially loyal customers. And loyal customers are hugely important because it costs much less to retain existing customers than it does to constantly find new ones.

Moreover, if you’re deceitful and are found out, there is every chance that the customers who were deceived will leave negative customer reviews so that more people learn about your taste for deception.

Ethics, of course, isn’t what we do when people are looking. It’s what we do when people aren’t looking. As such, the core reason your business should be transparent is because it’s simply ethical. It allows you to uphold a gold standard of values by which your entire business - including all your employees - submit to.

Business transparency, then, is you as a business making a commitment to being open about who you are and what you do. This extends to everything, including how you source your products, where you source them from and so on.

For instance, we’ve seen so many examples of greenwashing that it’s untrue. Greenwashing is when a business claims to be environmentally friendly - but over-exaggerates their claims. In other words, they’re giving a false impression about who they are and what they stand for. They’re gaining customers who want to buy from a brand who’s doing their bit for their environment, but they’re misleading said customers in the first place.

Ultimately, business transparency creates trust. And when you create trust as a business, you’ll gain more loyal customers.

But something more than that happens. When you’re open and communicative with your customers, and when you do the right things for them and the planet as a whole, you lead and others follow. You’ll set examples, raise awareness and persuade your customers to buy into what you’re doing away from your business pursuits, such as charitable donations.

How To Be More Transparent

Demonstrate a Sustainable Purpose

Source: Photo by Zoe Schaeffer on Unsplash

71% of customers say they prefer to shop with businesses who share their values.

Meanwhile, more and more customers are environmentally-aware these days, which means that more people want business to be sustainable.

As such, there are two recommendations here: One, it’s important that your business finds a purpose that goes beyond mere numbers. In other words, as important as making sales is, it’s now equally important that you undertake charitable and sustainable endeavours. This could include sourcing your products sustainably, switching to organic packaging, donating a percentage of all sales to a charity and so on.

These are just some ideas.

Secondly, you need to communicate your purpose to your customers. Make them aware of what it is that you’re doing. If your company is championing a sustainable cause, let us know! :) Customers will buy into your positivity, and you may inspire others to - in their own small way - help change the world.

More than anything else, don’t mislead your customers by exaggerating your purpose (see above for greenwashing).

Get Your Employees To Buy Into What You’re Doing

It’s not enough that your business is transparent and sustainable. Your employees must follow your example and buy into your culture. Otherwise, this just won’t work.

Make sure that your employees understand your values, as well as what information you share. Keep them in the loop with everything that’s going on. This prevents rumours and distrust and encourages your whole team to be open and transparent.

Engage With Your Customers - Share Stories

Source: Photo by Adam Winger on Unsplash

Thanks to the rise of social media, blogs and the internet in general, we’re now able to see the faces behind the businesses we love.

For example, zero waste company Upcircle Beauty’s co-founders Anna and William Brightman have given interviews that explain the origins of their company, as well as their reason for starting a zero waste company. Their stories and their background resonate with people - their stories are our stories, and such transparency encourages us to do business with them.

Meanwhile, brands are using Instagram Stories and suchlike to share behind-the-scenes footage of what really goes on at their business - where their products come from, how they’re made and so on.

This kind of engagement makes people positive about brands. It also makes the brand itself more open and more trustworthy. But you can do more. You can also humanise your brand by sharing candid, real-life experiences that you as an entrepreneur/business leader have been through. How did you get here, where you come from - and where do you want this journey to take you?

By bringing your customers onboard like this, you’re creating trust and transparency, and this is perfect for building long-term relationships.

Be Clear About What You Do With Online Data

There are many ways to be more transparent as a business offline - but what about your online activities?

For the last few years, how online businesses store and use their customers’ data has been a hot topic. Indeed, a few years back customers never really knew what a business did with their data. Things eventually came to a head, and customers now want online businesses to be 100% transparent about how they handle data.

Naturally, data collection is really important for online businesses. There is certain data you as a business need to help you understand more about who your customers are and what they want and need. But it’s essential that you don’t use their data for unethical reasons, and it’s also important that you communicate on your website exactly how you’ll be using their data.

Don’t use vague language - be direct. Don’t leave anything open to interpretation.

Final Thoughts

There are many ways a business can be more transparent, but it starts with those at the top leading from the front. Where you lead, others will follow. When you set examples and don’t waver from your principles, your employees and your customers will listen and buy into what you’re doing.

This will not only help your business to thrive, but it can also inspire and encourage others to do the right things, too. Ultimately, a transparent business can create a better world.

Your Kids Will Love These Outdoor Activities!

Looking for ideas to spend quality time with your kids — and keep them from getting bored? Indeed, how can you balance fun with coronavirus restrictions?!

EASY.

Don’t believe us? Let’s have a look!

Plant a tree

Planting a tree was one of our “top 10 eco-friendly things to do this summer,” and it’s also something you can do with your kids. Indeed, it’s something you should do with kids because children are inherently curious about nature. If they see a tree, they’ll want to know more about it, including how it got there, how old it is, what it’s called, how many leaves it’s got (I hope you’re good at counting)…

Nature really is inspiring and it never fails to stir a child’s mind. So go read this guide all about how to plant a tree and then get to it with your kids. Make sure to give it a name, too!

Race toy cars

When I was a kid, toy cars were one of my favorite things ever. My friend and I would use chalk to make lines in my parents' yard. Then, we’d grab ten toy cars each, roll the die — and start racing them.

For example, we’d each pick a car to begin the race with. Then, I’d roll the die. If it landed on “one,” my car would move forward one space (rats). My friend would then roll the die. If it landed on “six,” his would move forward six spaces (double rats).

And the thing with taking a box of toy cars outdoors is that there are all kinds of natural props you can use to create some realistic rocky terrain, including twigs and stones. So. Much. Fun.

Racing toy cars can also teach everyone the spirit of competition, but it’s important to remind the kids that it’s not the winning that counts — it’s the taking part.

Unless you win. Then it’s all about the winning.

Make an outdoor den

Another thing we’d love to do as kids is make our own outdoor den. But den building can be something you do together. It’s great for bonding and learning, and it will spark your child’s imagination, as well as help to connect them with nature.

And, hey, if it rains, your den could be an awesome shelter from the storm!

Go here to learn more about building an outdoor den.

Make a sand volcano

If you can get to a beach, making sand volcanoes with the kids is a whole lotta fun in the summertime. If you can’t get to a beach, try and find your nearest sand pit (or even invest in one of your own, jeez).

Not sure how to make a sand volcano?

Fortunately all you really need is a bucket, some baking soda and vinegar.

Oh, and sand.

Lava is optional.

Go here to learn more about making a sand volcano.

Build a bird box

The first (and sadly, only) time I ever built a bird box was at school. It was so cool and I’m pretty certain that, while we’ve since moved out of my childhood home, that bird box is still there, housing birds and witnessing births and so on. So cool.

Building a bird box is a great thing to do with your kids during the summer time. It’s challenging, for sure, but it’s an exciting and rewarding project that gets everyone involved. Plus, you can paint it afterwards.

And when it’s done, the fun really begins because you can watch birds making the box their home and raising their young (and, okay, making lots of noise).

Learn all about how to build a bird box here.

Make mud pies!

Who didn’t make mud pies when they were younger?

I even knew a kid who made mud balls that he threw at people!

Jeez. I wonder what became of him.

Making mud pies is a fantastic outdoor activity for kids for a few reasons, not least because the mud feels super squishy!

And let’s face it, kids have this endless fascination with setting up their own kitchen and cooking for you! Such helpfulness tends to die away when they hit their teens, sad.

Anyway — go here to learn about how to make your own mud pies from mud and water. But we do recommend that you have an entertaining water fight on a hot summer’s day, either using your water guns if you have any OR sponge water bombs.

What are sponge water bombs?!

Well, they’re not exactly rocket science but they are a tad more complicated than soaking a sponge in water and throwing it at people!

In fact, you can learn all about making a sponge water bomb here using a sponge and an elastic band.

We hope you enjoyed these outdoor ideas with kids! Yet, you must have wondered, are they really that much different from your regular hair care?

We spoke to Svetlana Lelik, the founder of Solidamie, to get a better understanding of this complex topic. Watch our Solutions Pod episode for more info and read on to find out why solid shampoos and conditioners are the most sustainable option out there!

How much water do bottled shampoos contain?

You will find up to 85% of water inside a bottle of shampoo. Why so much water, right? The answer is simple. It’s so much cheaper to just bulk a bottle with water, but sell it for a ‘beauty product’ price, keeping the profits high. In fact, you are paying for about 15% of actual active ingredients and the unnecessary packaging, of course.

Most of us pick up a large and heavy bottle of shampoo, thinking that it must have a lot of value in it. The heavier and larger the packaging, the more the producer can charge for it, but it’s usually just a part of tricking the consumer.

If you pay for a large bottle of a shampoo or a conditioner, you are most likely deceived into thinking that this bottle has a lot of value in it. Most of the time, solid shampoo bars have a lot more uses in them without excessive amount of packaging.

What about the packaging?

The big issue with cosmetics and daily care products is the packaging. Almost every type of packaging used by the beauty industry comes with consequences. In fact, the industry’s waste issue amounts to 120 billion units of packaging each year!

Plastic, glass, paper (which has a plastic liner to keep the container from absorbing the liquid), aluminum… Many may think that these materials are widely recycled, but countless recycling centers don’t accept beauty products, as it costs a lot to categorize, detach, clean, and sort the components.

Are all solid shampoos and conditioners the same?

No, not all solid shampoos and conditioners are the same, so checking the formulations is key to choosing the right product. Most of those soap-looking products are made by mixing oils with caustic soda, which is effective in acid. It then takes three weeks for the soap to solidify and for soda to evaporate.

This formulation is likely to give you the so-called “squeaky clean” feeling on your skin or hair after a shower or a bath. Some people like that feeling, but it’s not as good as it may sound. In fact, the “squeaky clean” feeling is soap that hard water couldn’t wash away. Think of the soap build-up in your tub or on the shower doors, that is pretty much what’s stuck to your hair or body… Gross, right? Not only that, but you may also get clogged up pores and irritated, itchy, flaky, and dry skin because of the soap left behind on your skin.

Other formulations have no soap. They may use surfactants, in other words, cleansing ingredients made out of the derivatives of various vegetables or natural ingredients. For example, rapeseed oil or coconut oil. Once those ingredients are mixed, there is no need to wait, they may be used immediately after.

Many people claim this formulation makes their hair feel soft and healthy. Solid shampoos and conditioners with no-soap formulation are a perfect travelling companion, as not only you don’t need to worry about the size of your liquid bottles, but you also don’t need to put up with those little hotel shampoos and conditioners that most often make your hair look like a broom. Not to forget, those are also a pretty unsustainable choice.

I keep seeing SLS or SLES on my hair products, what does it mean?

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are detergent ingredients that you may find on your shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and household cleaning bottles.

It is an cheap but effective foaming agent, though is linked to skin irritation. Not all solid shampoos are free from SLS, so check the list of ingredients to understand each product better.

Another big “no” against SLS is the fact that it’s often tested on animals, since the producers need to make sure it won’t cause extreme damage to humans.

Natural hair care tips from Svetlana (Solidamie)

Adopt an aloe vera plant and take a little piece off weekly. Massage aloe vera juice in your scalp to stimulate your hair roots. This routine will promote a healthy blood supply to your scalp, promoting great hair growth, and volume.

Try different oils as a pre-wash mask for the tips only (avoid putting it on your roots, as it might make your hair greasy), looking for the one that works best for you. Many people prefer coconut oil or olive oil, but there are great amounts of options to explore.

You may also wish to use your favorite oil after a hair wash, as a natural serum. In this case use literally one or two drops on the tips only. Moderation is key when you use oils on your hair.

Be
